Facebook keeps suggesting I friend an ex of mine who died a couple of years back. There's also the friend who died in college who's bday appears every year. I don't have the heart to defriend him, but it's a yearly awkwardness. There's also the whole "stop suggesting people to me that I hate" thing you mention. That's an issue everyone's probably dealt with.

I'd be fine with Facebook stopping that. I mean are people really finding friends that way?

For those who already have a regular fb, I like the idea of having nothing on there at all except a screen name and an email addy you haven't linked to anything else. The only reason I say that is because facebook changes are happening so fast that if you're worried about the most minor things the best thing is to have a blank space where fb changes don't much matter.

For my account, I don't mind people knowing who's behind it or anything, and I'm not worried about any changes that allows facebook to use my alma mater and location. I do, however, hate their photo policy which is why I either have one up at a time or none. I use my blog email, but for a long time on twitter and facebook i used email addresses that weren't linked to anything but social media.

What are your thoughts on setting up an anonymous dummy account, one that's only linked to a screenname and email versus a dummy account that has your correct info, albeit without much detail?

I read what you wrote. I understand what you wrote. And I am very happy for your experience. On the other hand, I know Philadelphia, specifically West Philadelphia, where teachers called me nigger and tried to have me repeat grades when my test scores were the highest in the class. The problem is that none of this is simple, and none of it can be characterized by one experience. My biggest issue with the piece is that it assumes kids know these things exist. Once you get to 8th or 9th grade, in a lot of cases, it's too late to really start preparing. And if your elementary school is nothing but a glorified babysitter from Grades 1 through 6, how much random outside luck and support is required just to get you to a point where you can have these conversations with an adult once you become 12 or 13?

You said you spent your time as a kid talking to adults not playing with friends??? So basically you spent your child hood as a small adult? And thats what all poor kids should do? Interesting.

Where you and I disagree: most kids don't have adult minds and friends like you did. You are the exception. Try to empathize with the rule.

I understand that people may be offended by the article...but I was a poor latino kid in Queens - and I did all that stuff. I didn't have a computer so I used the library's computer. I would spend my time talking to teachers and other adults instead of playing with other kids. I made sure I knew all about the magnet schools and that I made best friends with guidance counselors. You may be a sociologist or have worked in politics or government, but I lived through that stuff. Reading his article did not offend me because I saw myself as what he idealized. And I became successful. I got the scholarships for college and eventually graduated from law school and now enjoy a career as an attorney in New York City. And I can tell you from experience, other kids did not take full advantage of the available opportunities. I can't imagine what they could have become. You don't really need an extra 8 hours - you need to take your future seriously. And as a young poor minority, you need to take your future seriously from a very early age.

I couldn't agree more. I stopped watching the show because of this. Maya Rudolph is talented and as some who could pass for her sister, I can freely say that her appearance is not black enough to play the part of all the women that are so familiar to us and are constantly in the news. When are some of those black male snl players going to grow a backbone and refuse to dress in drag rather than suggest hiring a black women player or two.
